SUMMARY:RYA Day Skipper Practical Course
DESCRIPTION:We are running practical courses in conjunction with renowned RYA recognised training operator Fairview Sailing\, which means we can now offer members competitively priced practical courses in the spring to enable you to obtain your Competent Crew\, Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper qualification. \nFairview use new superior quality yachts\, we have arranged to use their Beneteau Oceanis 37s\, which have 3 cabins\, 8 berths. There is a maximum of 5 students per yacht. \nThe course includes quality wet weather gear\, living on board\, breakfast\, lunch and 3 evening meals (one to be taken at a local pub / restaurant). \n\nThe Instructor for the course is Peter Launchbury\, who has instructed Coastal Skipper and Day Skipper Theory courses at SYC for a number of years and has sailed for most of his life. Peter’s qualifications include Yachtmaster\, Sail and Power\, all commercially endorsed by the RYA/MCA\, additionally a Yachtmaster Instructor with considerable experience in both Practical and Shore-based training. He is also a SRC Instructor / Assessor.

DESCRIPTION:NEW FOR 2026 – Summer Regatta Series! \nAn experiment for 2026! The Summer Series is typically held over a very long period\, from May to September. Many boats struggle to complete the full series due to other summer commitments and for those sailing\, RTI\, Cowes Week etc there is a lot to do. \nOther clubs are experimenting with running more regatta type events and so for 2026 we plan to run 3 weekends of 2 day racing. Features being planned: \n\n2-3 races per day\nSplit fleets reflecting boat classes\nCommittee boat starts\nDaily Prizegiving with sponsor prizes\nFood and drink deals at SYC\nEntertainments\n\nWeekends have been chosen in an attempt to avoid clashes with other major UK events. DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the generosity and support of Stow's Restaurent\, SYC members can enjoy a complimentary breakfast on race day for this years Royal Escape Race. \nOn the 22nd May 2026 the race will start from a line off Brighton East Pier then on to Fecamp in France. \nThe start off Brighton is in recognition that The Old Ship was once owned by Nicholas Tattersall of Brighthelmstone. Tattersall’s ship\,”The Surprise” was renamed\, The Royal Escape\, became a serving Royal Navy ship and Nicholas Tattersall  was awarded a Royal Navy Commision in recognition of his role in the escape of Charles II. In 1670 he was given the prestigious position of High Constable of Brighton. That same year he acquired the Old Ship Hotel\, and it is said that within the Old Ship there are timber beams taken from his ship The Royal Escape. \nPlease do come by the clubhouse at 07:30 for breakfast on 22nd May 2026\, to watch a streaming of the boats leave on our historic annual race to Fécamp and cheers another spectacular Royal Escape Race. \nThere will be champagne on arrival to toast the 46th Royal Escape Race. \nPlease secure yourself a seat as numbers will be limited. \n
