SUMMARY:RYA Young Sailors Course
DESCRIPTION: The RYA Young Sailors Course Scheme  held during the late summer in August 2026 helps young people learn to sail step by step within a safe and supportive environment. \nThe course has no fixed time limits for each stage\, allowing children to progress at their own pace according to their age and enthusiasm. \nEach stage focuses on specific skills\, giving instructors the freedom to sign off achievements as students demonstrate competence. Everyone can succeed — some may just need a bit more time and experience. \nCertificates are awarded based on demonstrated ability\, not just attendance. \nIf your child falls into this category\, we do not want them to feel they have failed in any way. Our aims are to ensure they will have had a lot of fun\, learn a great deal and want to continue sailing in the future. \n\nStage 1 : \nAged 8+: The first two days of the course cover the syllabus for this stage. You should be able to launch a dinghy and get under way\, steer and turn a dinghy when sailing\, tie figure of eight knots\, be happy in the water wearing personal buoyancy. \nStage 2 :\nAged 8+: This three day course follows on from stage 1 and will develop your sailing skills along the syllabus as found in RYA Young Sailors Logbook G11. Pre-requisite is stage 1 or other suitable experience. \nStage 3 &  Stage 4:\nAged 11+: This course will move further on with the RYA Start Sailing syllabus\, covering the stages 3 and 4 as appropriate to each individual. By the end we hope to have everyone confidently sailing a dinghy in light wind conditions. Stage 3 will be in single handers with Stage 4 moving to double handers introducing the skills of crewing. It is unlikely that stage 3 and 4 will be achievable in one week. If your aim is to get both certificates\, repeating this course would be the way forward. \n\nAll these courses are run simultaneously during our RYA Young Sailors’ Week (course) in the summer\, traditionally during August summer holiday and will be back in 2026. The minimum age for this course is 8 years old. All participants must become cadet members at a cost of £54 as of October 2025. \n\n\nDuration: 5 Days \nTimes: 09.30 - 17.00 \nCourse dates: 10th - 14th August 2026 \nLocation: Southwick Clubhouse

DESCRIPTION:NEW FOR 2026 – Summer Regatta Series! \nAn experiment for 2026! The Summer Series is typically held over a very long period\, from May to September. Many boats struggle to complete the full series due to other summer commitments and for those sailing\, RTI\, Cowes Week etc there is a lot to do. \nOther clubs are experimenting with running more regatta type events and so for 2026 we plan to run 3 weekends of 2 day racing. Features being planned: \n\n2-3 races per day\nSplit fleets reflecting boat classes\nCommittee boat starts\nDaily Prizegiving with sponsor prizes\nFood and drink deals at SYC\nEntertainments\n\nWeekends have been chosen in an attempt to avoid clashes with other major UK events. Let’s try it! \nCompetitor attendance and feedback will be used to determine the success of the events and if its repeated in future years.

DESCRIPTION:Shoreham's charity Raft Race\, created in 2019 and hosted by Sussex Yacht Club\, was inspired by the much-missed Bath Tub Race. It aims to raise much-needed funds for charity and bring the local community together for a fun event on the water. \nWe aspire to make this an annual\, fun summer event eagerly anticipated by the whole community. However\, it's not just about fun; we also aim to raise funds for local charities. All surpluses over and above the event costs will be passed on to our selected local charities. \nCharties selected for this years raft race will be announced at a later date. \nPlease note: This years tickets can only be purchased in group sizes of 4 to 8 people. We kindly ask that you organise your teams in advance before purchasing tickets for this year’s race. \nThe day begins at 1100hrs.
